Surrogate Darling Speaking With Morristown Seniors

Morris County Surrogate Heather J. Darling, Esq. visited the Morristown Senior Center last week to speak with members of the community about wills, trusts, and estate planning. During her presentation, Surrogate Darling walked attendees through the probate process, emphasizing the importance of initiating probate soon after the loss of a loved one to avoid unnecessary delays and complications for the family. She also outlined the various circumstances under which a guardian may need to be appointed, giving attendees a clearer picture of how and why the court becomes involved in these matters.

Surrogate Darling also addressed key considerations in estate planning, including when it is advisable to consult an estate planning attorney and the importance of planning at least five years in advance when establishing a trust. She further explained the role of an attestation clause in a will, helping attendees better understand the legal safeguards that ensure a will is properly executed. Following her remarks, Surrogate Darling took questions from community members, addressing concerns and providing further clarity on the topics discussed.
