Published on April 30, 2026
Morris County Surrogate Heather J. Darling addressed a crowded audience this week at the Roxbury Public Library, delivering an informative and engaging presentation on wills, trusts, and estate planning. During her remarks, Surrogate Darling outlined the critical role of the Surrogate’s Court and emphasized the importance of having a valid will in place to ensure that an individual’s wishes are clearly documented and legally recognized. She also provided practical guidance on selecting and naming an executor, along with key responsibilities and considerations that executors should understand when administering an estate.
Surrogate Darling also highlighted the office’s ongoing modernization efforts, including 24/7 access to services through online filing, a newly redesigned website featuring AI-powered search capabilities, and an AI chat function that can assist users in multiple languages. She further discussed “Hannah,” the office’s AI-powered voice assistant, which provides callers with assistance 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.
In addition to wills and estate administration, Surrogate Darling offered valuable insight into the use of trusts and the process of adult guardianships, helping attendees better understand options for protecting assets and supporting loved ones. The presentation concluded with an interactive question-and-answer session, during which Deputy Surrogate Chris Luongo joined Surrogate Darling in fielding questions from attendees, allowing residents to raise concerns and receive direct guidance. The event reflects the Surrogate’s ongoing commitment to community outreach, public education, and leveraging technology to make government services more accessible and responsive to the needs of Morris County residents.
